Seventh Son, by Orson Scott Card. This is another alternative history, but it was a while ago. I didn't feel there was enough background. It felt like the book ended very abruptly, without getting to the important parts.

Gunpowder Empire, by Harry Turtledove. I've liked (or at least, not disliked) most of this author's work, but I wasn't such a fan of this one. It seemed over-simplified, like a book for younger readers. I want more detail.

The Wise Woman, by Philippa Gregory. I don't like this author, so I have no idea why I keep reading her stuff. Her characters aren't too bright.
